Community Solar Farm

We now have 250 kW powered by Solar Energy on our grid!

Sign up today or call our office at (803) 684‑4248 to participate in our renewable energy program. Limit 5 kW per member.

YEC is shining the light for solar energy use in our area by being one of the first utilities to offer its members the opportunity to subscribe to a community solar farm.

YEC is excited to bring this opportunity to our members. Members who are interested can participate for as low as $130 to start the program. Monthly billing will follow the initial fees at the rate of $12 per kW subscription. Subsequently, participating members will receive a solar credit on their bill at the rate of 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), which will be based upon the amount of energy the farm produces proportional to their kW subscription.

Investing in clean, renewable energy is important as we grow into the future, and this gives our members an opportunity to participate without changing the appearance of their homes, upkeep, and costs of installing their own panels.

Many of YEC’s members have concerns regarding installing panels on their home because of permitting and HOA regulations. Always looking out for our membership, we see this not only as an investment in the future of energy, but as a way to accommodate the needs and expectations of our membership.

YEC has proudly served the areas of York, Chester, Cherokee and Lancaster counties for 75 years and has grown to include more than 58,000 member accounts.

Community Solar programs have been introduced by York Electric and other cooperatives around South Carolina. The state’s 20, consumer-owned, independent co-ops have collaborated with Central Electric Power Cooperative, their jointly-owned power supply aggregator, to design solar programs for S.C. co-op members.

Community Solar with York Electric Cooperative

Here’s a short guide to solar energy’s path from community farm to your pocket:

Community solar produces electricity.

Then, the electricity produced becomes energy (kWh) credits.

That electricity is used to power your home.

And, finally, energy (kWh) credits are applied to your electric bill.

Fort Mill Solar Panels FAQ

They are Sharp panels and were made in Memphis, Tennessee.

Approximately 50KWH per day (on good days). On a good day, the solar panels will be able to supply the Fort Mill office and also put extra on the grid. YEC is putting all the electricity generated back on the grid instead of tying it back to the office. The panels have the potential to generate approximately half of the office’s use for a year.

The projected cost, which Santee Cooper is providing with monies generated from Green Power, is $35,449.
