Energy Audits

Is your bill higher than expected?

Have you received a higher monthly energy bill than you were expecting? Before requesting an energy audit, be sure to ask yourself these questions:

  • Has the amount of people living in my home recently increased?

Even just one extra person sharing your home can increase your energy usage and monthly bill. Check out helpful ways to save energy and money on our energy efficiency tips page.

  • Has the weather been exceptionally hot or cold lately?

Extreme temperatures can put extra strain on your heating and cooling system, which can lead to higher bills. Prepare for temperature changes and bill fluctuation throughout the year by signing up for Levelized Billing.

  • Have I recently installed a swimming pool, hot tub, or jacuzzi?

Though swimming pools and hot tubs can be a great addition for your home, their extra energy usage can quickly add up. Save energy and money by using an energy-efficient pump, using a cover when not in use and by maintaining your filter and cleaning system.

  • Do I have a smart thermostat?

A smart thermostat is a programmable thermostat that connects to your home’s WiFi and gives you the ability to adjust your thermostat setting to fit your schedule and save energy. Interested? Learn more about York Electric’s Smart Thermostat Program.

YEC's Brent Clinton looking at an electricity meterIs a home energy audit for you?

To help you keep the cost of power low, York Electric offers a home energy audit program. At your request, qualified York Electric personnel will visit your home and advise you on improvements that can result in energy and money savings.

This value-added service is provided at no cost to you and can be scheduled to occur at your convenience during normal business hours.

Most of the home energy audits that Brent Clinton (above, right), York Electric Cooperative's Energy Services Representative, does for members focus on "the basics," such as tight-sealing doors and windows and proper insulation. On a recent audit, however, Clinton went to check the insulation under the house and found an iced-over heat pump, which the member had not noticed. "The auxiliary heat strips were providing all of her home's heat," he notes. "That meant some pretty high bills!" Clinton advised her to call an HVAC specialist. The main problem? An unplugged defrost switch.

The value of electricity remains very high. The national cost of electricity today, when adjusted for inflation, is less than what it was in 1980. Very few commodities have remained such a good value. Compared to other consumer products and services, electricity is a bargain.
